Some Types of Cancers Everyone Should be Screened For

Being diagnosed with cancer is a scary prospect. However, there are some cancers that are treatable, especially if caught early. That's why screening is extremely important. So, what kinds of cancer should everyone be screened for at some point? Here are five of them.

Colorectal

People should start being screened for this as early as 45, according to the CDC. Admittedly, this is not the most fun one to prepare for - unless one likes being in the bathroom for basically a day. This is an important screening, though, and it's once every few years. Don't skip this one.

Breast Cancer

This is one that should be screened both at home in the form of regular breast exams and also with mammograms. This form of cancer affects a lot of women - and some men, too. If caught early, cancer surgery, like a mastectomy, can be avoided. Be extra diligent if there's a family history of it.

Cervical

Here is another cancer that an ob-gynecologist is always on the lookout for. Women need to have regular Pap smears to monitor for that as well as cervical ultrasounds. This can be a very dangerous and deadly cancer.

Lung Cancer

This is an odd one since there are so many different factors that can cause lung cancer. Of course, smoking is the first one. There have been non-smokers who have gotten it, though. It's a good idea to get screened regularly for it because if it advances, it's a very grim prognosis.

Skin Cancer

Of course, there are other cancers that you should be on the lookout for. They include mouth (your dentist keeps track of that.), throat, thyroid, and many others. They tend to be rarer, and some don't show signs until they have progressed beyond treatment options.

There's a saying, "What I don't know won't kill me." That is not true at all when it comes to cancer. People who have pancreatic cancer, for example, will most likely strongly disagree with this saying. It's better to have screenings and find out earlier rather than later. It will also help achieve cancer surgery at a time when you still have a high chance of recovery.
