Meet Dr. Ritha Belizaire: Double Board-Certified Colorectal Surgeon in Houston

In my practice, I see patients who have been struggling for months or even years with symptoms they were told to just live with. Chronic bowel leakage that keeps them from traveling. Pelvic pain that no one has been able to explain. A diagnosis of colorectal cancer that came with more questions than answers. Many of my patients come to me after being told their symptoms are "just IBS" or "nothing to worry about." By the time they walk through my door, they are frustrated, exhausted, and looking for someone who will actually listen.

That is exactly why I built this practice. I am a double board-certified general and colorectal surgeon, and I have spent over a decade in academic and clinical surgery treating complex colorectal conditions. But credentials alone are not what make a good surgeon. What matters most is that you feel heard, that your concerns are taken seriously, and that you understand your diagnosis and your options before any decisions are made.

I am Dr. Ritha Belizaire, and my practice is here in Houston Heights because this community deserves access to that kind of care.

Education and Training

I grew up in Midland, Texas, and knew early on that I wanted a career in both science and service. I earned my bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from Yale University in 2002, where I was also a member of the women's varsity soccer team.

After Yale, I completed my medical education at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 2008 and entered general surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati. During residency, I was awarded a National Institutes of Health T32 training grant to complete a two-year research fellowship. This is a competitive, federally funded program that gave me the opportunity to deepen my understanding of surgical science alongside my clinical training.

Following residency, I spent a year at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx practicing acute care surgery. I then pursued my passion for colorectal surgery by completing a fellowship at Mt. Sinai West/St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. That fellowship gave me advanced training in complex colorectal conditions, minimally invasive techniques, and pelvic floor disorders.

After fellowship, I served the downtown Brooklyn community at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, where I practiced both general and colorectal surgery for two years. It was during that time that I became a mother, and with my then 10-month-old daughter, I made the decision to move closer to home.

In 2019, I joined the UT Health Houston faculty as an assistant professor of surgery. I spent several years teaching medical students and surgical residents. I also served as the Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Surgery. That role gave me the chance to advocate for equity in medical education — something that continues to shape how I lead my own practice today.

I founded Houston Community Surgical to bring everything I had learned, in academic medicine, in the operating room, and in my own life, into a practice built around the kind of care I believe every patient deserves.

What We Treat

My practice covers the full spectrum of colorectal and general surgery — from conditions that are common but undertreated, to complex cases that require specialized surgical expertise.

As a colon and rectal surgeon, I treat conditions including:

  • Fecal incontinence and accidental bowel leakage — including Axonics Therapy (sacral neuromodulation), a treatment that can help restore bowel control for patients who have not responded to other options

  • Rectal prolapse — including robotic ventral mesh rectopexy, a minimally invasive approach to repair

  • Bowel endometriosis — a condition I treat in collaboration with gynecologic surgeons, with patients coming from across the state and beyond

  • Colorectal cancer — including robotic colon surgery, staging, and coordination with medical and radiation oncology teams

  • Diverticulitis — when surgery is needed, I offer robotic-assisted colectomy for faster recovery

  • Hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistulas, and other anorectal conditions — many of which can be treated in the office

  • Hernia repair, gallbladder removal, and colostomy or ileostomy reversal

Our Approach to Care

I spent years in academic medicine, teaching, researching, and operating in some of the country's busiest surgical programs. I brought that level of training into a private practice setting because I believe you should not have to navigate a large hospital system to get expert surgical care.

When your condition involves more than one specialty, I work alongside gynecologists, gastroenterologists, and oncologists to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. For surgical procedures, I use robotic and minimally invasive techniques whenever possible, which can mean smaller incisions, less pain, and a faster return to your daily life.

I also know that access matters. My office offers same-day and next-day appointments so you are not waiting weeks to be seen. And if you are not local or want a second opinion before committing to surgery, I offer virtual second opinion consultations through https://www.2ndscope.com.

Inclusive Care and Our Commitment

As one of very few Black female colorectal surgeons in Houston, I understand what it means to walk into a medical office and wonder whether you will be seen, heard, and respected. Representation matters in medicine, and I am proud to bring that perspective to every patient interaction.

At Houston Community Surgical, we are committed to fostering an environment of inclusivity, respect, and equality. We firmly stand against racism, discrimination, and hate in all forms. Our goal is to provide exceptional medical care while upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and compassion. We believe that every patient deserves to be treated with dignity and without prejudice. We strive to create a safe space for all people, and we welcome individuals of every race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. We acknowledge that systemic racism and discrimination exists within healthcare systems, and we are dedicated to actively challenging and dismantling these barriers.

This is not a statement we put on our website and forget about. It is a commitment that shapes how we hire, how we train, and how we show up for our patients every day.
