5 Things to Expect From Bowel Endometriosis Surgery

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, approximately 6.5 million people in the U.S. have endometriosis. It's important to know what to expect and the possible complications that can arise from this procedure. Here are a few things to expect from bowel endometriosis surgery.

1. Pre-Operative Preparations

Before having surgery for bowel endometriosis, you'll discuss the procedure with your doctor. Questions should include how long the surgery will take and what risks or complications could arise. Your doctor will also discuss pre-operative instructions such as fasting before the procedure, not eating or drinking anything after midnight on the day of surgery, and taking a shower using antibacterial soap.

2. The Surgery

There are different types of bowel endometriosis surgery, but the most common is a laparoscopic procedure. This type of surgery is performed under general anesthesia and requires small incisions in the abdomen. During the procedure, the doctor will inspect the bowel and remove any endometrial tissue found in the area. The surgeon may need to remove additional bowel tissue depending on how extensive the endometriosis is.

3. Post-Operative Care

After surgery, you may experience symptoms like pain, swelling, and soreness. It's important to follow your doctor's instructions for post-operative care very closely to minimize any potential complications. This care usually includes following a specific bowel movement schedule, taking medication prescribed by your doctor, and using ice packs or heating pads for pain relief.

4. Possible Complications

As with any surgery, a bowel endometriosis procedure carries certain risks and complications. Common complications include infection, bleeding, damage to surrounding organs, or the formation of scar tissue in the bowel region. It's important to monitor for signs of infection or excessive bleeding after the procedure.

5. Recovery Period

The recovery period after this surgery will vary depending on the type of procedure and how extensive the endometriosis was. You may need to take time off from work or other activities while you recover. Rest as much as possible during this time and follow your doctor's instructions.

Bowel endometriosis surgery can be a complicated and risky procedure. It's important to discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor so you can make an informed decision. Knowing what to expect from bowel endometriosis surgery will help you prepare for a successful operation and recovery. Contact Houston Community Surgical for more information.
